(212) 219-2527
In this course with La Shonda Tyree, who turned her hobby and passion for making her own soaps and lotions into a highly successful business, we will learn how to make a range of exquisite self-care products. We will begin by discovering the history of soap-making, the benefits of vegetable oil-based products, and the safety practices required to make soap. We will then get hands-on instruction in soap-making using lye or glycerin, and observe the making of soap from scratch with the cold-process method. We will explore how to unleash our creativity by customizing our soaps with colors, fragrances and/or herbs, and learn how to create luxurious lotions from scratch with oils that nourish the skin as well as other skin care products, such as custom bath fizzies, bath salts and body scrubs. Other topics will include: how to find sources for ingredients; proper product labeling and preservation; and how to start a business.
Note: A materials fee of $45 will be payable to the instructor. Participants need to bring Pyrex measuring cups and two small or medium plastic containers. Each participant will get to take home four bottles of handmade products.
